1) 제외
(1) but은 all, no, nobody, anywhere, nowhere, everything, 의문사(who, where, what) 등의 뒤에서만 쓴다.
ex) There was no one there but Jane.
(2) but은 부사로 단지(=only)의 뜻을 갖기도 한다.
ex) Go there but fast.
2) 방향 표시
(1) to: 정확한 목표 지점까지를 말한다.
ex) The city is about 20 miles to the north of New York.
The water came right to his knees.(∼까지)
cf) She threw a ball at me.(과녁, 목적 지점을 말함)
(2) for: 목적지를 향한 출발을 말한다.
ex) The man left for the shops.(향하여)

cf) Is this the train to New York? (∼까지)
(3) toward(s): 목적지에 닿는 것과 관계없이 ∼쪽으로의 뜻이다. ⊙ 고득점 문법
